Fairfax, VA – June 8, 2004: MKS Inc. (MKS) (TSE:MKX) announced today the release of version 8.7 of its market leading MKS Toolkit® product line. The proven solution for porting robust, mission-critical UNIX/Linux applications to Windows also provides a comprehensive suite of powerful scripting tools to help automate tasks and improve user productivity and cross-platform interoperability.

MKS Toolkit products enable you to preserve your investments in UNIX software and expertise as you deploy Windows-based workstations and servers, making it possible to port scripts, source code, and working environments quickly and easily from UNIX to Windows.

"The 8.7 release is by far the most significant step forward for the MKS porting products," said Alan Hall, Managing Director of Scientific Computers Ltd, an MKS partner that focuses on migration services. "By embracing 64-bit Windows and providing support for GCC, this release provides a clear path for our customers who have expanded the breadth and depth of the UNIX applications they would like to move to the Microsoft environment."

New Features in MKS Toolkit 8.7 Include:

  • gcc Compiler Support — along with Microsoft Visual Studio, MKS Toolkit for Professional Developers and MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers now support the gcc compiler for migrating applications from UNIX/Linux to Windows. A pre-compiled version of gcc, along with source code, can be found on the MKS Toolkit v8.7 Resource Kit CD.

  • Support for 64-bit Windows — with MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers 64-bit Edition this release will support the extended architecture 64-bit platforms such as AMD64 and when available, Pentium64 and Xeon64 running Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating systems. Enterprise customers and ISVs now have a single solution that will allow them to migrate both 32-bit and 64-bit UNIX/Linux applications for deployment on both Itanium and Extended Architecture 64-bit Windows platforms.

  • Enhanced Support for Real Time Applications — features from the Single UNIX Specification v3 such as Message Queues, Memory Locks, Barriers and others in addition to those features already in the product such as POSIX Threads, Memory Mapping and Semaphores have been added to MKS Toolkit for Professional Developers, MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers and MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers 64-bit Edition to support the migration of real time UNIX/Linux applications to Windows.

  • Secure Visual File Manipulation — Visual SFTP is a powerful new Windows Explorer extension that allows you to easily drag and drop files through a secure connection just as easily as you would on your local network. Seamlessly integrated with Windows Explorer, Visual SFTP allows you to open one or multiple connections and securely transfer or manipulate files found on remote Windows, UNIX/Linux, or any other system that supports the SSH protocols.

"The simultaneous growth and upward mobility of Linux and Windows is driving renewed demand for migration and interoperability solutions," says Tom Bosanko, President of the MKS Interoperability Division. "MKS Toolkit 8.7 represents our commitment to providing the features our customers are asking for such as gcc compiler support, migrations to 64-bit Windows, and Visual Secure FTP. We are dedicated to providing ongoing value to our large base of loyal customers that know they can rely on us to help them solve their migration and interoperability problems."
