Pragmatic Approach Speeds ROI of Enterprise Software Configuration Management Investments

Waterloo, ON - May 30, 2002: MKS Inc. (MKS) (TSE:MKX), a leading provider of tools to manage and control the software development process, today announced its MKS Integrity Solution™ Process Assessment, a new services offering for organizations implementing enterprise software configuration management (SCM) tools.

Through analysis and documentation of a company's existing software development process, this service will help organizations refine and automate their software change management processes prior to implementation and product configuration, providing the necessary roadmap that will help them use their SCM tools to meet their goals as efficiently as possible. Good process refinement reduces the complexity of developing software, and aids development team productivity.

MKS has been in the business of SCM and change management for over 17 years. In that time, MKS has researched and developed best practices for helping companies implement tools and processes that fit their unique environment. MKS believes change management and SCM tools should build on the successful components of a company's strategy and organization, and not require a total overhaul of its working processes.

The MKS Integrity Solution Process Assessment focuses on understanding the existing processes used by a company to develop software, optimizing them for maximum payback, and then mapping the process into the toolset. This approach enables MKS to work with any software development methodology on the market, including XP, SCRUM and various others. It is designed to create new efficiencies, cut development costs and increase the quality of internal and customer-facing, mission-critical applications.

"Through our experience with enterprise customers, we have recognized that most organizations have a process for building software -- and it works. Where we can add value is by helping that organization to refine and automate the processes they have and map them into our MKS Integrity Solution. This allows our customer to use our tools to maximum advantage, and achieve greater productivity, greater efficiency, and faster return on investment for their tool purchases," says David Martin, MKS vice president, Product Management.

An experienced MKS consultant will facilitate a process assessment and document how a change management (CM) and software configuration management (SCM) solution can be implemented to enhance the software development environment. The MKS Integrity Solution Process Assessment includes the following consulting services once a planning questionnaire and technical conference call has taken place:

  • Onsite process discovery facilitation meetings;
  • Process analysis; report and MKS Integrity Manager™ template preparation;
  • Presentation of report findings; and
  • Implementation plan

At the end of the assessment, MKS will deliver a clear and comprehensive process report that will help facilitate a smooth transition and implementation. The document will describe an organization's development environment, including team and individual roles and responsibilities, process workflow diagrams and information requirements. MKS will provide recommendations for refinement or improvement, and MKS Integrity Manager process configuration templates for making the implementation of the updated processes more efficient. Companies will then be able to achieve the following goals:

  • Understand and document current processes and propose 'best practice' updates;
  • Ensure that its SCM tools are configured and implemented to provide the greatest benefit to the organization;
  • Ensure effortless configuration and implementation by anticipating and solving issues before they impact the productivity of development teams; and
  • Identify ROI measures to track the success of the SCM solution.
