Impact Analysis, Simplified Integrations into Software Configuration Management Systems and More

Waterloo, ON - June 5, 2002: MKS Inc. (MKS) (TSE:MKX), a leading provider of tools to manage and control the software development process, today announced the latest version of its enterprise software asset management system, now called MKS Code Integrity™ Enterprise 7.4. MKS Code Integrity Enterprise was previously known as DISCOVER 7.3.

MKS Code Integrity Enterprise allows organizations to more thoroughly understand their software systems, to more efficiently and accurately make changes to a large body of source code, and to more easily reengineer or reorganize a complex software system, improving organizational productivity and quality, while reducing time to market. MKS Code Integrity Enterprise analyzes C/C++ and Java source code and related artifacts, creating a Web-accessible, scalable, common database of information (the Information Model). The Information Model captures the relationships between all entities, resulting in a high-level architectural perspective and a detailed view of the entire application, which can be shared across the organization and monitored over time.

With the introduction of version 7.4, MKS has added impact analysis capability to MKS Code Integrity Enterprise. This specialized analysis tool assesses the impact of making a change to source code, allowing developers to avoid introducing new errors by enabling them to see, comprehend and assess all relationships inside the software prior to making changes, eliminating costly rework by allowing developers to compare the impact of implementing alternative solutions, and helping to keep software projects on track. Impact analysis will also show what files must be recompiled afterwards, saving developers from having to recompile everything to test their changes. Ultimately, this feature will help engineers to avoid the "fix one, break two" scenario.

Many leading Fortune 500 companies have used MKS Code Integrity Enterprise for years to manage and improve the quality of their mission-critical software projects where there is a high cost to fix or a high cost of failure. Not relying on testing alone, these organizations have saved magnitudes of time and money by applying a series of predefined industry-accepted programming rules and metrics early and throughout the development cycle to produce Quality Assessment Reports (QARs). The QAR provides quantitative and qualitative information in both graphical and textual forms about the structure and compliance of an application to the rules, plus a list of non-compliant instances for review and remediation. MKS Code Integrity Enterprise also allows engineers and managers to graphically track the progress of software projects throughout their lifecycle, essential for planning and improving the predictability of a scheduled software release.

In addition to impact analysis, additional enhancements in MKS Code Integrity Enterprise 7.4 include:

  • Integration into Borland® JBuilder™ 3.5 and later - JBuilder users now have seamless source code and impact analysis functionality without leaving their familiar IDE.
  • Simplified integration into software configuration management (SCM) systems - Through the use of a single configuration file, easily select your SCM system of choice.
  • Improved header file simplification (Simplify.h) functionality - All write-able files are now valid targets for a Simplify analysis. It is no longer necessary for target files to be contents of a user's home directory. Fewer unnecessary header files results in reduced footprint, and cleaner, faster software builds.
  • Improved Tree Pattern Matching (TPM) Change Propagation feature - Users can simply make files writeable and begin propagating changes to their entire code base. The ability to traverse, analyze, and modify source code syntax trees, is possible through MKS Code Integrity Enterprise's TPM technology. The TPM language allows the user to identify and transform regions of code based on their logical structure. Any programming construct that can be formally specified is a candidate for TPM.
  • Improved Information Model Procedures - Eliminates the initial Cache and Analyze stages of the model build process, reducing the five-step process down to three (Parse, Update, and Finalize).
  • Plus more - Improved performance, usability, and administration.

"MKS sees incredible value for new and existing customers of DISCOVER to upgrade to the new version now branded under MKS Code Integrity Enterprise," says David Martin, MKS vice president, Product Management. "This product now provides an engineer or manager with the ability to understand the impact of a potential software change, identify the size of the potential change, and compare the impact of alternative solutions. This will significantly improve the predictability of a scheduled software release, while avoiding costly rework caused by an uninformed change."
