Ameren drives software development best practices with MKS Integrity and BMC Remedy

Waterloo, ON - June 12, 2009: MKS Inc., (MKS) (TSX: MKX) the global application lifecycle management (ALM) technology leader, today announced that Ameren Corporation (NYSE: AEE), a Fortune 500 investor-owned electric and gas utility in the United States, has deployed MKS Integrity™ with integration to BMC Remedy to manage software development across their enterprise. The deployment includes traceability between IT applications and IT operations for better control and responsiveness when managing both application development projects and support activities.

Ameren's Missouri utility is the largest provider of electricity and the third largest supplier of natural gas in Missouri and the corporation's four utility companies rank as the second largest distributor of electricity in Illinois. Ameren companies provide electricity to 2.4 million electric and nearly one million natural gas customers throughout a 64,000-square-mile area. Ameren's vision is to become the best utility company in the United States in the eyes of customers, shareholders, communities, and employees. This vision is pursued by software development and IT operations within Ameren through best- practice initiatives aimed at improving productivity, ensuring process consistency, and mitigating risk.

MKS Integrity was implemented to provide a single, centralized solution for application lifecycle management across the hundreds of applications managed by Ameren IT. This consolidation enables Ameren to achieve auditable control over a very dynamic and business-critical set of processes for source control, builds, and deployments across the application portfolio. Ameren is better able to mitigate risks, accelerate production deployment scheduling, and improve security and authorization structures to support governance and compliance with regulations, like Sarbanes-Oxley.

At Ameren, reassignment of development resources to critical steady-state 'bug fix' activities has the potential to impact delivery of new value-add enhancement and development activities. Ameren required the ability to redeploy resources to address critical steady-state incidents, while understanding the impacts of that redeployment and retaining work-in-progress for new development so that work on the projects could be resumed quickly. This requirement led to integration of MKS Integrity application lifecycle management (ALM) with the BMC Remedy help desk solution deployed at Ameren. The resulting application development, test, and release activities can now be tracked back to the original incidents, for closed-loop traceability. This helps Ameren more effectively manage application team workload and priorities.

"We chose MKS Integrity to help us achieve our vision of information technology performance leadership in the U.S. electric and gas utility industry," said Mary P. Heger, Director, Development in Information Technology at Ameren. "We have hundreds of applications deployed and previously had eight separate software defect management systems (none of which connected with our helpdesk). With end-to-end exposure from help desk incident to change request to deployed product, Ameren can respond more quickly and effectively. This transparency not only helps us meet our compliance needs but also greatly adds visibility regarding changing business priorities and the impacts to development projects. We can reassign resources to meet critical steady-state issues and just as quickly resume new development activities when the critical issue is resolved with full transparency."

"Connecting development and operations is integral to the business value jointly delivered by MKS and BMC," said John Cull, VP Marketing MKS Inc. "This deployment at Ameren underscores the value inherent in bridging the information and process chasm that exists for many organizations between IT business management and application development. Bringing together information from both the BMC Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and the MKS Application Management Database (AMDB) 'closes the loop' between development and operations and ultimately drives the kind of best practices needed by industry leaders like Ameren. When companies can understand and measure the linkages between service incidents and the related software development activity, development is no longer a 'black box' for the processes and metrics of IT operations."
